As the winter chill settles over Newcastle, there’s a perfect opportunity to embrace the season’s charm just a short drive away in Maitland. This Saturday, 27 July, The Levee in Central Maitland is hosting its Winter Warmer event, promising a delightful day out for families and visitors alike.
From 10:00am to 2:00pm, The Levee will transform into a bustling marketplace featuring over 20 local stallholders. Shoppers can discover unique, handmade items, enjoy cosy foods and hot drinks, and participate in engaging workshops. It’s the perfect way to support local businesses and artisans while enjoying a fun-filled family outing.
David Graham, The Levee’s Public Programs Officer, is enthusiastic about the event. “While staying cosy indoors might be tempting, we’re encouraging everyone to rug up and come out to support our vibrant local businesses,” he said. “There will be a fantastic selection of knitted, sewn, and crocheted accessories, from vintage-inspired jewellery and artisan soaps to clay creations reflecting the Hunter region.”
The event will also feature live music from local artists, adding to the festive atmosphere. From 10:00am, Hunter-based country artist Saralyn and acoustic folk performer Jarrod Grant will entertain visitors with their soulful tunes at the Elgin Street end of The Levee Shared Zone. “We’re thrilled to highlight local talent and offer fantastic entertainment for the whole family with a wonderful lineup of musicians,” Mr Graham added.
In addition to shopping and music, the Winter Warmer offers free interactive workshops. Visitors can create their own beeswax tea lights and rolled candles with Ecru Candles or dye cotton tote bags using all-natural plant-based dyes with Studio Tinta. These activities provide a hands-on experience and a chance to learn new skills, making it a perfect outing for families looking to engage their children in creative endeavours.
The Levee’s Winter Warmer is more than just a market; it’s a celebration of Maitland’s rich history and community spirit. Established along the Hunter River, The Levee has been a central part of Maitland’s economy for generations. Historically functioning as a levee bank to protect the town from floods, the area has evolved into a vibrant precinct that blends its historical roots with modern charm.
For those of us in Newcastle, a visit to Maitland offers a refreshing change of scenery and a chance to explore a neighbouring town’s unique offerings. The Levee’s Winter Warmer provides an ideal opportunity to enjoy a day out with family, supporting local talent and businesses while soaking in the winter atmosphere.
“We’re looking forward to activating The Levee this winter, starting with our winter mini markets and leading into Active August – a series of fitness and recreational events to enhance your wellbeing on Saturday 3, 17, and 31 August,” Mr Graham said, hinting at more exciting events to come.
So, if you’re looking for a delightful winter outing this weekend, make your way to Maitland for The Levee’s Winter Warmer. Experience the best of local craftsmanship, enjoy live entertainment, and participate in unique workshops. For more details, visit The Levee’s website. Don’t miss out on this wonderful opportunity to create lasting winter memories with your family.
