A researcher at the University of Newcastle and Hunter Medical Research Institute, Dr. Verrills said the Stars of Newcastle event has pushed her outside of her comfort zone. “The dance training is reminding me about muscles that I had forgotten about, and as a researcher I know first-hand how important the fundraising is and what a difference in makes in the fight against cancer, so I’m really proud to be involved”.

A country girl from Armidale in northern NSW, Natasha Beyersdorf got her start in an appropriate place, the country music capital of Tamworth. At Radio 2TM, the home of Hoedown in those days some 20 years ago, Natasha worked as a journalist and newsreader and developed a penchant for the music of Keith Urban! Natasha’s first job in TV was at Prime in Tamworth where she cut her teeth as a regional journalist covering everything from fatal accidents to local fetes. In 1997, Natasha moved to Newcastle to join her now husband Brett Lavaring working at Prime TV. Natasha was the Chief-of-Staff and later the News Editor. When Prime’s Newcastle service folded, she moved to a PR and fundraising role at the John Hunter Children’s Hospital before joining NBN as a reporter, producer and newsreader in 2001. Natasha has fronted the weekday 6pm news for NBN for the past nine years, as well as reporting and compiling special news presentations.
Outside of work, Natasha is busy chasing after her children Campbell, 11, and Matilda, eight.

Sarge is one of Newcastle’s best known radio personalities. She’s one third of the Kim, Sarge and Steve St John Show on 1053 NEW FM. “Three years ago my dad, Ronnie, was diagnosed with prostate cancer, he was lucky enough to get through it but I know so many haven’t been so lucky. They’ve lost mothers, fathers, best friends and children to the terrible disease cancer.
As uncomfortable I am about dancing in front of hundreds of people I don’t know at Wests on May 1 for the “Stars of Newcastle” when I haven’t even stepped into a dance studio in my life, there’s little I wouldn’t do to help an incredible organisation like the Cancer Council. They work tirelessly everyday to try and find a cure for this terrible disease and give much needed support to those and their loved ones who are going through it.”
