Its not just a change in season that you associate with September, especially for those working in the racing industry. As September marks the start of the Australian thoroughbred breeding season, its also on the racecourse itself where key industry players will look to bloom during the spring racing carnival. For many of the countries leading trainers and jockeys, that opportunity begins on Wednesday with the Newcastle Jockey Club (NJC) hosting its annual two-day carnival.

Wednesday will see the running of the Cameron Handicap, while Thursday will feature the NJC’s flagship event, the Newcastle Gold Cup.
Once the carnival is over the Broadmeadow racecourse will undergo its long-awaited upgrade after Racing NSW gave the green light for the $10 million project.

The NJC’s chief executive officer, Cameron Williams, discusses the upgrade to the racecourse, as well as the 2014 spring carnival. This interview by Luke Hislop from Hunter Highlights.
